The primary students of Quambone Public School travelled to the Macquarie Marshes on Monday accompanied by Ray ‘Indiana' Jones from the National Parks. Ray kept the children captivated with his knowledge on the flora & fauna of the Marsh area, its importance to the ecology of the area, the importance of the Marsh to our local area and the threats to the Marsh with the lack of water & other Government regulations that have impacted on the region.
It was a truly amazing experience with the Marsh well watered currently. We waded through waist deep water to the view many species of birds including Whistling Ducks, White Ibis, Water Coop, Intermediate Egrets, Glossy Ibis, Straw Neck Ibis, Hard Head Ducks, Purple Marsh Hens, Pacific Heron, White Faced Heron, Wild Geese, Grass Parrots & many others. The children described the reed beds as ‘awesome' & they were given the opportunity to actually go into the a reed bed, with reeds approx 6 feet high, to experience the humidity & microenvironment. A very enlightening & enjoyable Marsh adventure.
